Ausbildung (Vocational Training) Permit § 16a AufenthG

Germany's dual education system (Duales Ausbildungssystem) is renowned worldwide for combining theoretical classroom instruction with hands-on workplace training. The Ausbildung permit under § 16a AufenthG facilitates access to this system for non-EU/EEA citizens, offering a structured pathway to skilled employment in a regulated profession.

What Is the Ausbildung Permit?

The Ausbildung permit is a residence permit for non-EU/EEA citizens enrolling in a recognized vocational training program (Berufsausbildung) in Germany. The permit is issued for the duration of the apprenticeship, typically 2 to 3.5 years. Upon successful completion, vocational-training graduates may transition to skilled-worker residence under § 18a AufenthG, or use a job-search permit under § 20 AufenthG to secure qualifying employment.

Eligibility Requirements

1. A formal offer of an apprenticeship contract (Ausbildungsvertrag) from a recognized German employer registered with the responsible chamber (Handwerkskammer or IHK).

2. Proof of German language proficiency, generally at B1 level (CEFR); A2 may suffice for certain programmes under § 16a (3) AufenthG.

3. A school-leaving certificate (Schulabschluss) or equivalent qualification recognized under German law.
