Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte): Germany's Fast-Track Work Permit

The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is one of the newest and most flexible work permit options in Germany. Introduced in 2024, it allows qualified professionals to come to Germany to look for work without first holding a job offer.

What Is the Opportunity Card?

The Opportunity Card is a residence permit under § 20a AufenthG that allows qualified professionals to enter Germany and search for a job for up to one year. You do not need a job offer before arrival, and during that year you may work up to 20 hours per week in any field — not only roles matching your original qualifications — while you look for qualified employment.

Eligibility

The Opportunity Card is available to skilled workers and those who meet the requirements under a points-based scoring system as follows:

  • Professional qualification (recognized apprenticeship)
  • Work experience in roles matching your qualifications
  • German language proficiency (A1 or higher)
  • English language proficiency (B2 or higher)
  • Age (younger applicants score slightly higher)
  • Connection to Germany (work experience, time spent, family ties)

The One-Year Job Search

Once you arrive on an Opportunity Card, you have 12 months to find and secure employment. Work during this period is restricted to twenty hours of employment per week. Once you secure a qualifying job, you can transition directly to the appropriate work permit without needing to leave Germany to apply for a visa.

What Happens After the Year?

If you find a qualifying job before the 12 months expire, you can apply for an appropriate work permit (EU Blue Card, skilled worker, etc.) The permit can only be extended in specific cases. If you cannot find work within the year, it is imperative to seek advice in good time to assess your options to stay in Germany before your Opportunity Card expires.
